The Wave – Direct Sunshine Coast Rail Line

Building the next generation of rail for a growing region.

The $12 billion The Wave will deliver 37.8km of new dual-track passenger rail from Beerwah to Maroochydore.

Stage 1 involves constructing a dual-track rail line and associated infrastructure between Beerwah and Caloundra, including one upgraded station and 2 new stations.

Stage 2 involves a proposed extension of the rail line from Caloundra to Birtinya. This stage includes approximately 7 kilometres of dual track, approximately one kilometre of tunnel, and 2 new stations.

Stage 3 (metro) is planned to deliver a high capacity, high frequency service from Birtinya to the Sunshine Coast Airport via Maroochydore.

Led by the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads, the project aims to support the region’s long-term growth and readiness for the 2032 Olympic Games.
