Friday March 7, 2025

As we approach International Women’s Day 2025, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on one of the incredible talents driving innovation within our team.

Anya’s journey embodies the spirit of progress, demonstrating her passion and the power of curiosity and determination to achieve success.

Don’t let stereotypes define your potential.

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering? And how has your journey in the rail industry contributed to your personal and professional growth, and what advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter this field?

My fascination with how things work began in childhood, spent taking apart (and sometimes successfully putting back together!) household gadgets, often inspired by my engineer father.  Engineering felt like the perfect way to channel this curiosity into solving real-world problems.  The rail industry resonated with me as a field where I could contribute to large-scale innovation while also making a difference in terms of sustainability.  To young women aspiring to engineering careers:  Trust in your abilities, be open to new experiences, and don’t hesitate to make your presence felt.  Find mentors, nurture your curiosity, embrace continuous learning, and never stop questioning.

From your perspective as a young female engineer, what exciting developments or projects in the rail industry are you most passionate about, and how do you see your role contributing to the next 20 years of progress in this sector?

I’m excited by the transformative potential of smart rail technology, sustainable solutions, and AI integration in shaping the future of the industry. Looking ahead, my focus will be twofold: driving innovation in these key areas and mentoring emerging engineers to build a more connected, efficient, and sustainable rail network capable of meeting tomorrow’s challenges.

Trust in your abilities.

Don’t hesitate to make your presence felt.

Be open to new experiences.

What advice would you give to other young women considering a career in engineering, especially in a traditionally male-dominated field like rail? Are there any specific skills or qualities you’ve found particularly valuable in your journey?

My most important advice to aspiring women engineers: Don’t let stereotypes define your potential. Engineering thrives on problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration— these are qualities that anyone can bring to the table and transcend gender.

Building a strong support network is also crucial; it will make a world of difference. A strong support system will empower you to thrive.

Looking back at your own journey with IRE, what has been your most rewarding experience or accomplishment so far, and what are you most looking forward to achieving in the future?

I’m deeply grateful to IRE for the opportunities that have been instrumental in shaping my personal and professional growth.  The work environment and challenging assignments have allowed me to develop authenticity in my work, take ownership of my contributions, and build confidence in every project I undertake.

Looking forward, I’m excited to contribute to projects leveraging data and AI to enhance reliable solutions. I’m also passionate about supporting initiatives that encourage more women to pursue engineering and mentor the next generation shaping the evolving rail industry.
